Fake E-Visa Websites Target India Travel Applicants Online

A growing number of websites impersonating India's official e-visa portal are circulating online, targeting travellers who assume they are dealing with a government service. Several of these sites copy the layout, imagery and branding of the authentic application platform closely enough to deceive applicants who are unfamiliar with the official domain. The result is a consumer-protection problem that touches travel, payments and digital trust all at once.

How the deception works

These fraudulent platforms rely on a simple but effective tactic: visual mimicry. By replicating the home page design, colour scheme and layout of the genuine Government of India e-visa website, they create a convincing illusion of legitimacy. An applicant searching for visa information online may land on one of these pages without realising it has no connection to any government authority. Among the domains identified are globalvisacorp.com/destination/india, e-touristvisaindia.com, e-visaindia.com, indiavisa.org.in, evisaindia.com, online-visaindia.com, evisaindia.org, visatoindia.org, india-visa-gov.in, indianevisaservice.org and evisa-india-online.com. The use of terms like "india," "visa" and "gov" within these URLs is a deliberate attempt to exploit the trust travellers place in official-sounding web addresses.

Why this matters beyond a single scam

This pattern is not unique to visa services. It reflects a broader and persistent issue across digital platforms where consumers must verify an official source before sharing personal data or making a payment. Fake portals mimicking government services, banks or payment providers follow the same playbook: convincing design, a plausible domain name and urgency designed to discourage careful checking. Applicants who use these fraudulent sites risk more than financial loss. They may submit passport details, personal identification and payment information to operators with no accountability, no data protection obligations and no connection to any visa-issuing authority. Because e-visa processing in India is handled directly by the relevant government authority, intermediary sites claiming to offer official processing fall outside any legitimate chain of verification.

The official channel and what it means for applicants

The correct and only authorised website for e-visa applications is indianvisaonline.gov.in/visa. Applicants are advised against submitting information or payments on any other platform claiming to offer e-visa services. It is also worth clarifying that the e-visa system operates alongside, not in place of, regular visa services available through Indian consulates. Consulates have no administrative role in e-visa processing, since the system is managed centrally by the authority in India. For emergency visa-related assistance, applicants can refer to the official consular information channel at cgisf.gov.in.

Reducing exposure to fraudulent platforms

  • Confirm the website domain matches the official government address before entering any personal or payment information.
  • Avoid visa-related links shared through unsolicited emails, messages or advertisements.
  • Treat requests for unusual fees, urgent payment deadlines or document uploads on unfamiliar sites as warning signs.
  • Cross-check any visa service website against official consulate or embassy communications before proceeding.

As digital applications become the default route for visas, permits and official documentation, the responsibility for verification increasingly falls on the applicant. Government authorities can publish official domains, but awareness remains the most effective defence against sites built specifically to exploit a moment of urgency and unfamiliarity.
